What is Panchakarma?
Some details about Panchakarma will help you understand its features better. Panchakarma translates into “five actions,” and is a comprehensive Ayurvedic therapy that helps eliminate toxins (ama) and restore balance to the three doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. The five therapeutic steps—Vamana (therapeutic vomiting), Virechana (purgation), Basti (medicated enema), Nasya (nasal therapy), and Raktamokshana (bloodletting)—target different parts of the body and promote thorough inner healing.
The Panchakarma Process
1.Purvakarma (Preparation): Panchakarma is preceded by preparatory steps like Snehan (oil massage) and Swedana (herbal steam therapy), also known as Purvakarma. These massage therapies are geared toward mobilizing toxins and prepping the body for the actual Panchakarma process.
2.Main Procedures: Vamana (Therapeutic Vomiting): This process is aimed at removing Kapha from the system and is particularly helpful for improving respiratory and digestive health. Induced vomiting with medicated concoctions is a major part of this step of Panchakarma.
Virechana (Purgation): The liver, intestines, and gallbladder are detoxified with the help of herbal laxatives.
Basti (Medicated Enema): Herbal decoctions are administered into the colon to restore its health. Basti improves colon health and boosts nutrient absorption in the body, resulting in overall improved health.
Nasya (Nasal Therapy): In Nasya, medicated oils are administered in the nostrils of the patients to cure respiratory ailments like sinusitis. Head massage is also given to the visitors to further accentuate the positive effects of this healing therapy.
Raktamokshana (Bloodletting): A careful and deliberate bloodletting is encouraged to remove impure blood from the body. Sterilized instruments, leeches, etc. are employed to let out impure blood from the body, however, this therapy is very rarely practiced these days. Eczema, psoriasis, and other skin disorders are the primary targets of this Panchakarma therapy.
